PS Nation Review Policy.

I’ve used Plantronics products for years, but always at my job. Their phone headsets are a staple in that regard and the quality has always been stellar. This is my first opportunity to try any of their gaming products though, and quite frankly, I’m extremely pleased.

The Rig 600 Gaming Headset is meant to be plugged into a 3.5mm standard headphone jack, be it on your phone, music player, Vita, or controller. Included in the box are the requisite cables and connectors that you would expect.

You’ll find one with an inline microphone, a splitter to plug into a laptop or PC that has separate plug for both headphones and microphone, and a boom microphone, of which, a volume control and microphone mute are made available right on the cable.

The headphones themselves are pretty unassuming at first blush, but put them on your head and you’ll realize immediately that Plantronics is taking things seriously.

The padding on both the headband and the earcups is incredibly soft and pliable, offering good sound isolation but also allowing for enough air to get in so that it won’t induce sweat after a few minutes. The 40mm drivers offer an excellent amount of clarity throughout the spectrum, with just a bit of softness in the middle.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Striker Pro P1 headset from Polk since I reviewed it a year ago, and it’s what I usually compare other offerings in this price range against. While the earcups are a bit bigger, these are actually lighter and fit my head much better than the Polks.

I’ve been able to use these for hours at a time with no discomfort whatsoever, and the sound produced is as weighty as I’ve heard with any other headphones, with only the Crossfade Wireless edging them out in overall quality, at least while it’s plugged-in.

What really stands out though is the boom microphone. Plantronics has years of experience in creating solid microphones for headsets, and this is the definitely the best quality that I’ve found in a gaming headset. It doesn’t include a PS4-specific attenuator like Polk did, but you don’t need it.

Just make sure that you go to the audio settings on your PS4, Xbox One, or other device and adjust the mic level and you’ll quickly hear what I’m talking about. It really is exquisite and stands-out even against the boom microphone available for the V-MODA headphones, which have been a favorite of mine for a couple of years now.

Obviously, since these aren’t amplified in any way you won’t have any “fancy” audio modes to switch to or have any software to connect to if you’d want to adjust something. Also, these are Stereo headphones but they’ll handle any of the virtual 7.1 or 3D codecs that a device sends to them, and they handle it all with no problem at all. Using them with PlayStation VR has been a treat too. They fit very well over the headset, and when plugged into the PS VR audio connector they fully utilize the 3D audio sent to them.

Conclusion:

The Rig 600 headphones have knocked my beloved Polk Striker Pro P1’s off of the throne for me. My only concern really, is the asking price. At $99, they feel a bit too expensive when compared to some others, but the quality is unquestionable. I’ve been nothing but impressed with these headphones, and I doubt that feeling will change in the future.
